Today, on a Day 3 of our In-Depth series with Xuecong Lin we share with you his project “Margin”, where he takes us on a tour to witness the development and transformation of the southern coastal line of China.

I was born and grew up in a coastal city in southern China. Throughout my life I have been witnessing large scale development and transformation of my surrounding as well as the emergence of multiple contradictions caused by this rapid pace of change. Last year I decided to take the most direct approach possible, and simply create a body of work shooting along the southern coastal line. The confrontation of reality and my childhood memories was a stark realization – nothing from that time was there anymore, the distinct identity of the place has changed completely, in such a short period of time. What shocked me deeply was the depth of the change – it’s not only the environment, but also customs and beliefs of the people, the core family values have shifted. This new constellation filled me with a rather strange kind of sadness. The only thing left for me now is to hang onto the memories in my heart.
